When I was commissioned to shoot some edgy portraits, I had originally envisoned a handful of photographs a la Robert Mapplethorpe. However during the shoot, I was struck by the sadness and stoicism of decay and beauty, and its perpetual effort of transformation; so I turned it instead into a reflective series that explores the grace and grievance of aging.
